Getting motivated to work out is often the hardest part of staying fit, especially when your workout space is just steps away from your cozy couch. But deep down, we all know we’ll feel so much better once we get it done. If you need a little help getting started, here are four sneaky ways to trick yourself into getting your sweat on:
1. Put on Your Favorite Workout Clothes
Struggling to get up and start your workout? Make it easier by getting dressed for success. Whether that means sleeping in your running shorts or starting your workday in your activewear (why not, especially if you're working from home?), you’ll be much more likely to ease into your workout when you're already dressed for it.
Unexpected free hour in your day? Throw in a quick HIIT session without wasting a second to change into your gear. And hey, if your workout clothes are comfy, you might even feel like staying in them all day.
2. Try the Five-Minute Rule
Half the battle of working out is psyching yourself up for that first rep, round, or mile. If you’re daunted by the thought of a full workout, set a timer for five minutes and just get moving. Chances are, those endorphins will start flowing, and you’ll be motivated to keep going.
This method works wonders for me most of the time. And if after five minutes you’re still not feeling it, listen to your body and take a rest day! Sometimes all you need is that little push to get started.
3. Walk as Much as You Can
With many of us working from home, it’s easy to miss out on the extra steps we used to get throughout the day. Our office chair and after-work lounge spot are just a few steps away, making it harder to stay active.
To get more steps in, challenge yourself to take your video and phone meetings on the go. Take a walk outside with your headphones or do laps around your desk. You’d be surprised how many steps you can log during a 15-minute conference call. And don’t forget about those quick trips up and down the stairs – every bit counts!
4. Rethink What Counts as Exercise
Fitting in a daily workout can feel overwhelming, especially when you have work, pets, kids, and chores to juggle. On busy days, shift your mindset and count all the active things you do as exercise.
Take your dogs on a long walk, play an energetic game with your kids, or finally tackle that yard work you’ve been putting off. It all counts! The key is to have fun and not stress about fitting in a traditional workout. You’ll feel great knowing you moved your body and spent quality time with loved ones.
Our lives are busy, but staying active doesn’t have to be another chore. By sneaking in these small but effective activities, you can keep your body moving without even noticing. So let’s get creative and make fitness a fun, seamless part of our everyday routine!
